Gatanga is known to be home to most kikuyu musicians .In fact music is believed to be the third cash crop after coffee and tea. Youth find it as a lucrative means of livelihood and many hope to join the music industry to escape from the rising levels of unemployment and state of desperation. The cost of producing music is very high and most of them with no other gainful employment cannot afford additionally the upcoming musicians have no background training in music. They therefore produce music that is not very competitive in the Kenyan market. Over the years youths have been seeking assistance from all government offices to fund their music programs but have no succeeded owing to the commercial nature of their music and restrictions placed on government funding. Many have opted to organize fundraisings which hardly meet the costs. According to a value chain addition analysis conducted by UNICEF in 2010 gatanga youth leaders noted that most of their colleagues music fail in the market due to poor quality. They suggested that if only the artists were provided with the necessary training and thereafter a subsidized production cost their music would be at the desired market standards. The gatanga youth prioritized a talent academy as one of the most desired project for the youth which would add the highest value to their music. The talent academy has been financed by two organizations..
They have been organizing annually the Gatanga night held at the carnivore grounds, Nairobi. The aim of gatanga night is to fundraise for noble causes for instance they donated kshs.1, 200,000.00 towards equipping Kirwara Sub-district hospital. They also donated kshs.3, 000,000.00 towards the interior furnishings of the studio. The studio now lacks recording equipments which are being sourced. |
